Ce pamphlet s’emploie à réfuter la thèse de l’inexistence de Confucius, fort en vogue par les temps qui courent, chez les sinologues d’outre-Atlantique. Ces travaux, qui se sont développés à la faveur des découvertes archéologiques de ces dernières décennies, ont recours aux mêmes arguments que les négationnistes ; mais surtout, ils s’inscrivent dans le mouvement général de l’époque visant à la déréalisation du réel, et sont le contrecoup un peu dérisoire de la rivalité entre les deux puissances, Chine et Amérique.
La critique des arguments des tenants de ces théories fournit aussi l’occasion à l’auteur de proposer une lecture nouvelle des documents à notre disposition.
